The Push and Pull of Storytelling

Our early days as hunters and gatherers have taught us the value of fitting in.

Back then, if we did not fit in, we wouldn't survive. Now, fitting in doesn't contribute to our survival in anyway. But that desire to belong is so strong that we continue to fit in. And when an opportunity presents itself to stand out, we want it but we also resist it. It is a push and a pull.

To story tell is to stand out and not fit in.

As a result, even when we know how to tell a story, we will be afraid to tell. And our fear of saying things that people hear and may reject is even greater. So we play it safe and end up looking and sounding like everyone else.

It's not that we can't tell stories. It's that we resist doing it due to the fear of not fitting in.

And this is the constant pull and push of storytelling. Only few will stand out and story tell. I hope you are one of them.
